I recently went to a dog whelping and training seminar taught by Dr. Ian Dunbar. It was pretty good and I learned a lot about dog behavior. How to observe when your dog is in season, ready to mate, so on. Even more interesting was his puppy training techniques. He has a blog which I am going through right now and thought I'd share:
